Soil Nails

Soil nailing is a passive system to stabilize slopes, deep excavations and retaining walls, where deformations are irrelevant. The reinforcing elements (solid threaded bar or a self-drilling hollow bar) are drilled and grouted in the ground. As a result of the deformation of soil or weathered rock mass, tensile and shear forces act on the reinforcement. These axial tensile loads are transferred by soil nail to the surrounding soil through shear stresses along the grout-soil interface. Our soil nail system complies to EN 14490 and FHWA-NHI-14-007.
Depending on the design working life and aggressiveness of the environment, soil nails can be classified as Temporary Soil Nail (up to 2 years) and Permanent Soil Nail (upto 100 years).

Threaded Bar Soil Nails

Temporary Soil Nails: Single, hot rolled bar with continuous thread serves as the steel reinforcement. Soil nail head consists of a domed (formed) plate and a spherical nut. For projects where higher design working life need to be achieved, enhanced system with sacrificial corrosion loss or hot dip galvanized soil nails can be employed.
Permanent Soil Nails: For permanent applications, Double Corrosion Protection (DCP) system using a threaded bar shall be used. Threaded bar placed inside a HDPE or PVC corrugated sheathing and factory grouted serves as the reinforcement bar (tendon) which offers enhanced protection due to controlled crack width.

Benefits of Threaded Bar System

  • Steel bars can be cut and coupled without any additional threading at site to connect couplers
  • Splicing of bars using coupler is easy
  • Hot rolled threads with coarse pitch make it screw-able in challenging site conditions, thus making it suitable for geotechnical applications.
  • High relative rib area provides maximum bond stress between steel bar and cement grout

Threaded Solid Bars are available in

  • 500/550: Ø16 - 75 mm
  • 550/620: Ø20 - 75 mm
  • 670/800: Ø18 - 75 mm
  • 950/1050: Ø18 - 75 mm

Self-Drilling Hollow Bar Soil Nails

In unstable soils where temporary casing is required, self-drilling hollow bar system is a preferred alternative to coarse threaded solid bars.
Hollow bar offers fast, easy and flexible system in any soil conditions, which simultaneously acts as the drilling rod (with lost drill bit), grouting tube and reinforcement bar (tendon). In unstable soils, additional operations of inserting and extracting the casings are avoided. Self-drilling hollow bar system also eliminates the need for multi-stage grouting.

Self-Drilling Hollow Bars are available in

  • R25 to R114, R-type threads
  • T30 to T135, T-type threads
